The canopies placed above the visitor’s head to represent clouds, turn out to be mirrors. The poles become a forest a black marble river invites the visitor to walk towards the real mountain standing out against the horizon. While the visitor moves closer, he discovers a miniature landscape in which he can move and stroll. With speed, the poles become a single surface and the effects created by the different materials composing the poles reveal the shape of a new mountain. While approaching the site from the street, a vibrant mountain composed by 200 inox poles subtly appears in the distance. There are three different sequences of approach and just as many levels of perception in this installation.

A series of distinctive cultural hubs fuse the existing urban fabric with the water edge.Ī Museum of Earthen Architecture merges with the Protector dyke through a series landscape buildings and carved access ways responding to traditional architecture of mounded and rammed earth.Above all else, this installation is a landmark placed by the roadside to draw the attention to the entrance of the Dragon Mountain Natural site (Zhulong Shan), a typical example of « Shanshui » traditional Chinese landscape composed by mountains, forest, clouds and water. The main 1 in 100 year Protector dyke breaks away from traditional flood wall concepts by promoting opportunities for adjacent activities, this ‘multifunctional dyke’ allows for integration of landscape and architecture structures creating a multitude of uses along the river edge.

The Cultural Skin – Celebrating Xi’an’s Unique Identity Here traditional village layouts are extended incorporating enhanced fish ponds, orchards and farmscapes where visitors can experience sustainable farming and lifestyle practices. Phytofarm locations correspond with primary agricultural corridors for agrotourism and the preservation of local farming villages.

A terraced lakeside aquatic centre creates a swimming and water experience attraction for everyone featuring saunas, spas, lap pools, kid’s pools and ice skating in the winter.īiological and mechanical responses to soil pollution utilise dykes for capping, while providing phytoregeneration forests, wetlands and farms. The proposed Wild Goose Lake leverages this strategy, boasting a boat shed and beach with canoe hire, fishing and volleyball. By staging these systems behind and in front of the Protector dyke, it creates both ephemeral and protected sponge city networks, allowing for clean water detention all year round and a solution to local water scarcity. The historical pond landscape of Xian is returned via a stepped network of ponds, swales and creeks that capture, store and clean storm water.

The Ecological Skin – Environmental Synergy with the CityĪ rage of biodiversity regeneration strategies reinstate native habitats and clean domestic, industrial and agricultural pollutants. By diverting the watercourse the wetlands help slow water speeds, while the “Scale” formation offers an optimised shape for establishing wetland eco systems by dispersing water while minimising bank separation. A ‘Guardian Skin’ for climate resilience and flood mitigation An ‘Ecological Skin’, supporting onsite water treatment and biodiversity and a ‘Cultural Skin’ capturing the rich traditional and historical context of Xi’an.

The design proposes a ‘Three Skin’ approach to the site. Located on the One Belt, One Road land axis, the Dragon Skin River offers a template for growth and remediation, says Gossamer, by creating an active ecological spine and world class waterfront for greater Xi’an.
